November 20th, 2007The Salvation Army Chicago is taking care of their elderly with the Booth Manor, the way the elderly should be taken care of. The Salvation Army Chicago recognized a problem with the way the elderly were being taken care of or not being taken care of. Many elderly are left with tiny pension checks and no family to assist them. Some elderly end up homeless or living in shelters. The Salvation Army Chicago teamed up with HUD and is providing a low income subsidized housing for older adults in need of low-income housing.
Elderly who are currently residing in Chicago and meet the federal income requirements that qualify them for subsidized housing can apply to be a resident of the Booth Manor. The Booth Manor is setup to house almost 100 residents. If the Manor is full, a waiting list is available and space will be provided as it becomes available. It is important to keep in touch with them and make sure they have all of your current contact information so you don’t lose your place to live.
Salvation Army Chicago can furnish the apartments is furnishings are needed. It is the Salvation Army. Most people bring their own stuff, but if you don’t have anything, they can help.
All of the apartments are handicap accessible and are setup for wheelchairs, people in walkers, and meet any kind of needs. There are ramps along side of stairs and elevators too. Bathrooms and kitchens have enough space for wheelchairs and there is an emergency bell inside each apartment in case the staff needs to be notified of an emergency. Which is the next best thing, onsite staff that is there 24 hours a day, seven days a week to make sure that everyone is okay, and all amenities are working fine.
In addition to low income housing at Booth Manor, the Salvation Army Chicago has also setup day activities and classes for the elderly to attend so they can continue learning and growing.
Laundry facilities are also available, church, a lounge to meet friends and other people who live at the manor.
The Salvation Army Chicago is taking care of their elderly in need by providing a safe place for them to grow old on their own. Every state should abide to this way of thinking.
